OUR CORE THERAPIES
Chiropractic Therapy
During a manipulation, the doctor places the patient in a position that isolates the involved joint in order to apply a gentle thrust. The intent of the adjustment is to increase and restore full joint motion, which subsequently decreases muscle tension in the associated muscles.
Chiropractic joint manipulation ensures that joints move freely and can function properly by slightly mobilizing the joint being treated, thereby normalizing motion-sensitive nerves, blocking pain and reducing muscle spasms. Joint manipulation can be a key therapeutic aid to achieving proper joint function and pain management.
WHAT’S THE CRACKING SOUND?
The cracking sound is NOT your bones cracking. The audible crack/pop sound is actually caused by the release of gases from the fluid in the joint. The gases create a quick vacuum within the joint.
WHY IS CHIROPRACTIC MANIPULATION EFFECTIVE?
Chiropractic joint manipulation is effective because it aims to restore normal and healthy joint function. In order to function properly, joints must move freely. When joints are moving freely and are unrestricted, they can optimally sense joint motion and therefore relay vital information to the spinal cord and brain. On the other hand, when a joint is “restricted,” this can relay inaccurate or insufficient information about the joint’s motion. This typically occurs secondary to injury or overuse. When a tissue or joint is experiencing pain, the nerves subsequently create a guarding reflex that causes the surrounding muscles to tighten and spasm. A chiropractic adjustment/manipulation helps resolve this problem by normalizing joint movement so that correct nerve information is relayed to the spinal cord and brain.

SPECIALIZED MODALITIES
Active Release Therapy
WHAT IS ART® AND WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS?
ART® is a highly successful approach to the diagnosis and treatment of soft tissues including muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and fascia. ART® practitioners must take a comprehensive course and become certified to perform the technique. ART® is optimal to other soft tissue therapies in the sense that the practitioner is able to effectively apply appropriate tension to the injured structure in order to gain mobility and break up scar tissue and adhesions. It is effective for issues such as (but not limited to) low back pain, neck pain, elbow tendonosis, rotator cuff tendonosis, knee pain, shin splints, carpal tunnel syndrome, running injuries and numerous other conditions. ART® is the go-to therapy for professional athletes.
HOW DOES IT WORK AND WHY IS IT EFFECTIVE?
When a muscle, tendon, or ligament is injured, the body forms scar tissue (sometimes also called adhesions). Scar tissue is how the body connects and binds injured tissue. Unfortunately, that same scar tissue often sticks to surrounding structures like “glue.” If a nerve runs through a muscle in the spot where there is scar tissue, the nerve can be pinched or pulled by that adhesion, causing it to fire pain signals. The resulting limited motion overworks healthy tissue, also leading to pain. Scar tissue can also result from overuse of muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Scar tissue requires treatment because the body has no mechanism to reduce scar tissue naturally. Although the body can sometimes adapt to, and tolerate a certain amount of scar tissue, it will not function optimally and can cause further injury. ART® practitioners are highly skilled at finding the exact location of scar within each tissue and have over 500 specific treatment protocols that they can apply depending on the condition.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
ART® is a manual technique provided by the Chiropractor. Unlike other treatment methods, the patient is an active participant in ART®. Every ART® session is a combination of examination and treatment. Examination involves the identification of the soft tissue that has been injured and where scar tissue has formed due to direct injury or from overuse. Treatment then involves guided movement of the patient, increasing tension and breaking up the painful scar tissue.
Medical Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture, sometimes also referred to as dry needling or intramuscular therapy, is the use of solid filiform needles for the treatment of musclo-skeletal pain and soft tissue dysfunction. The insertion of needles into specific targets can help increase local blood flow to tissue and relax muscle tension. The needles also result in endorphin release, the body’s natural pain relieving chemicals. Acupuncture is a very effective modality in treating a variety of painful disorders, both acute and chronic.
WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE DO?
Contemporary acupuncture is used to stimulate peripheral nerves in order to modulate pain/dysfunction of the nervous system.
Physiologically, acupuncture:
- Increases perfusion and blood flow to the area/tissue (“reflex vasodilation”), which allows for more blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to enter the area. This assists in the healing process of the injured tissues.
- Restores and regulates motor activity and strength.
- Facilitates normal recruitment patterns of muscles.
- Increases tissue healing.
- Decreases adhesions between tissues which is caused with any injury to the tissue, whether it be a repetitive strain, or traumatic.
According to Westernized medicine, it is proposed that acupuncture produces its effects through regulating the nervous system. Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called “endorphins”. These chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found throughout the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pain pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in relief of pain, general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body’s own internal regulation systems.
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE?
- Reduce/relieve pain
- Improved and faster recovery from injury, illness and surgery.
- Encourages natural, drug-free healing.
- Improve mood and energy.
- Improve function of the affected area
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of a thin acupuncture needle into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. No drug is injected. The needles alone create the beneficial effects of acupuncture.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
The intention of acupuncture is to be a ‘painless needle insertion.’ At times, patients may say they did not feel the needle insertion, however, when the tissue is tender and certain target tissues are needled, there are occasions where patients may feel a brief sensation at the location where the needle was inserted.
ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE
In some cases, electro-acupuncture is used. Needles are electrically stimulated by various frequencies and voltages by attachment to a battery-powered machine using wires with small clips on the ends. Low-frequency stimulation (2-4 Hz) results in a slow onset of pain relief that outlasts the treatment for hours to days and is often cumulative by repeating treatments. High-frequency stimulation (80-200 Hz) results in a pain-blocking effect that is fast in onset but does not usually outlast the stimulation. Electro-acupuncture helps to enhance the effect of acupuncture on the Central Nervous System.
WHAT ARE SOME CONDITIONS THAT ACUPUNCTURE CAN TREAT?
- Acupuncture can help with most, if not all, musculoskeletal pain. Some examples include back pain, headaches, nerve pain, knee pain… and the list goes on!
- Other effective uses include treating anxiety, insomnia, digestive problems, menstrual problems, weight control, and infertility, however as Chiropractors, our training and focus is in a neuromusculoskeletal perspective.
Laser Therapy - Class IV
Laser Therapy supplies energy to the body in the form of photons or light. The laser energy is absorbed through the skin and causes tissue changes, stimulates tissue repair and creates an analgesic anti-inflammatory effect.
Benefits include:
- Rapid cell growth and cellular reproduction.
- Faster wound healing. Stimulates fibroblast development in damaged tissue, decreasing recovery time.
- Increases metabolic activity. Improves immune responses.
- Reduces fibrous tissue and scar tissue after injury or surgery.
- Anti-inflammatory action for improved joint mobility.
- Increases vascular (blood) activity. Stimulates lymph and blood circulation.
- Lasers stimulate the process of nerve cell reconnection to bring numb areas back to life.
- Laser increases the amplitude of action potentials to optimize muscle action.
Shockwave Therapy
WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
Therapeutic Radial Shockwaves are controlled pressure waves that cause a direct mechanical force at a cellular level as the wave’s energy passes through the tissue. This causes an increase in blood circulation through the injured site and accelerates the body’s natural healing processes. Shockwave increases the metabolic activity around the site of pain. It also stimulates re-absorption of calcium deposits in tendons, accelerates healing, and reduces pain.
Kinesio-Taping
Taping involves placing strips of elastic kinesiology tape onto the skin to balance muscle function. Kinesio Taping, unlike conventional athletic taping, is applied in a manner that allows the body to move freely without restriction. Taping can be used to help balance muscle firing patterns and improve joint function. Kinesio Tape is used by amateur, Olympic and professional athletes.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
After a functional evaluation, Kineio-Tape is placed over the muscles in a manner to either increase or decrease muscle activation. The intention is to optimize motor recruitment in order to improve the quality of movement of prescribed exercises.
HOW DOES IT WORK AND WHY IS IT EFFECTIVE?
Kinesio-Taping works by affecting the specialized nerve receptors of the skin and the underlying fascia through the gentle tugging action the tape offers during movement. This results in normalization of motor function and improves quality of movement.
Orthotics
The purpose of an orthotic is to maintain proper joint alignment in the foot and to offer support to the structures of the foot. Poor arch support can lead to foot, knee, hip, or back pain, which is why custom orthotics are beneficial in most cases.
Many insurance plans cover orthotics completely or partially.
Compression Stockings
Compression stockings are hosiery specialized to prevent against circulation problems. The compression of the limb provides pressure against the legs, which causes an increase in venous blood flow velocity and assists with the efficiency of the valve. They help to prevent stasis (“lack of movement”) of the venous blood flow and therefore help relieve heavy and achy legs.
Compression stockings are stronger than your typical stockings. The result of compression stockings leads to better blood return to the heart and less pooling in the feet!
Fascial Abrasion And Release
The Fascial Abrasion involves the use of a surgical steel tool to break down scar tissue and resolve fascial restrictions. Fascial abrasion is used to treat painful conditions resulting from injury or overuse disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, cervical and lumbar strain, tendinosis (achilles, rotator cuff) patella-femoral knee pain and tennis and golfers elbow.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
A specially designed instrument, is used to both identify and to treat areas of fascial restriction. The contoured shape of the instrument allows clinicians to use the tool to scan the body and locate the presence of fascial restrictions. The same instrument is then used to apply precise pressure to reduce fascial tension.
HOW DOES IT WORK AND WHY IS IT EFFECTIVE?
Fascial abrasion provides a controlled micro trauma that stimulates specialized nerve endings in the skin and fascia that help to normalize fascial tone. The tool can also be used to treat scar tissue that maybe causing pain or limiting motion. It can also stimulate a local inflammatory response that supports rebuilding of injured soft tissue
Cupping Technique
PURPOSE OF THE CUPPING TECHNIQUE
Cupping relieves tension and reduces friction and adhesions in the underlying tissue. Cupping increases blood flow and lymphatic circulation. The muscle tissue is subsequently relaxed, and also draws pathogenic factors and toxins out of the body.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
The therapist applies a specialized plastic cup onto the skin. The cupping machine is turned on which creates a suction effect. This draws the skin and underlying tissue into the cup, which will cause the patient to feel a therapeutic suction sensation. The therapist then moves the cup in a continuous fashion amongst the target area.
HOW DOES IT FEEL? SIDE EFFECTS?
This technique is not typically painful. It feels like a slight pulling and “suction” to the area where the cupping is applied. A potential redness may or may not occur in the tissue. Each patient and each treatment is different. The treatment is “dynamic,” which means the suction cups are always moving. This helps to limit redness, in comparison to the alternative, static cupping techniques.
